06/28/2008 - Civilization has been on a journey of changing worldviews: from the oral culture of Jesus’ day, to the print world introduced by Gutenberg’s Bible, to the broadcast era of television, to today’s digital culture. In Jesus time, the magic of the oral culture was a world in which burning bushes, parting seas, miraculous battles, and resurrections were entirely plausible. Conversely, “how to manuals” are staples of the print era. . . . MORE

05/18/2008 - Once again Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy—the Pevensies—find themselves back in Narnia when Prince Caspian, the rightful heir of Narnia, blows a horn and calls them from a London subway station into Narnia. But this is not the same Narnia they knew from entering through their uncle’s wardrobe. It is hundreds of years later, and the Talamarinds have attacked Narnians and have driven them into the forest to hide away. . . . MORE

05/07/2008 - In the years since my mother's death, I have often had moments where I wanted to talk to her. Whether it was seeking advice, wanting to share a special moment, or simply the desire to say hi, there are times when I just wish my mom was still here. But again, I am reminded that we live in a broken world where death is inevitable and no one is immune from pain and suffering. . . . MORE

05/09/2008 - Fred: Just what do you believe in? How does this all fit into the ultimate truth about life—death?
Hemant: I believe in the goodness of people. We all want to survive and the best way for this to happen is to live peacefully with other people and help them (I've heard religious people criticize this because it seems to go against the idea of "survival of the fittest," but any research on the benefits of altruism can explain why this is good for us.) . . .MORE

04/08/2008 - The opening story pulled me in; the later dialogs had me dog-earing pages to go back to. I find myself referring to ideas from its pages in conversation. There’s a lot of truth and love packed into this little story. I love the fact that it doesn’t play down the role of Jesus like so many current treatises on spirituality seem to do, but illustrates and reveals his role in drawing people to God’s heart. . . . 03/30/2008 - " ... an attractional church can work in a Christendom context, but in a missionary context it actually undermines our efforts to reach people meaningfully with the Gospel of Jesus. It is literally out-moded! A ‘sent people’ no matter how you configure it implies a going of sorts. And when combined with the other primary theological metaphor in the Bible of how God reaches the nations, namely the Incarnation, it clashes head-on with the primary expectation built into attractional forms of church. 03/20/2008 - Skeptics still may not agree with emergent sensibilities, but at least The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier leaves nothing in the bag to wonder about. Tony Jones lays out a treatise on the emergent movement in the newest of his flurry of books. In it he builds a long list of “dispatches” from the frontier and suggests that it’s decision time for mainline churches: join us, support us, or get out of the way. . . . MORE

03/15/2008 - The fellowship that is only found in Wal-Mart lines or McDonald’s playground—the moments that bring together people of all different walks of life—came this one day to an overcrowded courtyard. That Sunday afternoon, for two hours, we joined in a gospel experience. We stepped into this complex and we discovered that God was there. He was in the process of loving, liberating, and announcing the good news of the kingdom. . . . MORE

03/10/2008 - We’re called to unity with all Christians everywhere who call Christ Lord. When Jesus prayed his unity prayer, he didn’t parse every doctrine and neither will I here. We live the Christ-life and follow the rule of the Holy Spirit to keep that everlasting covenant God the Father has kept since creation. Christ and Paul and our own more recent forefathers such as Thomas Campbell call us to produce fruit and look for fruit of the Spirit in the lives of fellow disciples. Will Churches of Christ, Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, and Disciples of Christ join this new restoration? . . . MORE

05/26/2008 - This Memorial Day we will all remember someone we love . . . Hundreds of you responded and have been praying for Eric Noah-Wilson, his family and his sister, Kristi. Eric says, "No words can adequately express how you ministered to me through your prayers, visits, emails, texts, and calls over the past week." God hears our prayers, loves us, regardless of the outcome of grief and heartache. We are deeply saddened that Kristi died Wednesday, May 21. . . . MORE

06/22/2008 - After nearly a decade of unsuccessfully trying to figure out how to implement this pick-your-own-program model of discipleship, I’ve come to several conclusions. First, most of the Christians I know are not self-motivated in the area of discipleship. They don’t wake up looking for ways to grow in Christlikeness. . . . MORE

06/18/2008 - We live in an energized culture that moves at the blink of think. Adrenaline rush is the drug of choice. The busier we become the happier we think we are. Even without conditioning our lives to live at a rested pace, we will eventually be stopped. It may happen in the form of a failed relationship, a death, legal action, or some other collision course. We are not created to live on adrenaline and feelings alone. . . . MORe
